Job Overview

Shape Global Development: Become a UNCDF Strategic Engagement Intern!

Are you a passionate, driven individual eager to contribute to sustainable development and inclusive finance on a global scale? The United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) is seeking a dedicated UNCDF Strategic Engagement Intern to join its team in New York City. To clarify, this internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the intersection of development and finance within the United Nations system.

About UNCDF: Driving Impact Through Strategic Engagement

The United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) operates as an autonomous organization within the UN, primarily focusing on assisting developing countries, especially the least developed countries (LDCs). Ultimately, UNCDF’s vision is clear: to mobilize and increase capital flows for SDG-impactful investments. This, consequently, directly addresses pressing development challenges in vulnerable communities, thereby contributing to sustainable economic growth and equitable prosperity.

UNCDF utilizes its unique position within the UN system to deploy grants, loans, and guarantees. This capability, furthermore, helps “crowd-in” finance, scaling up development impact where needs are greatest. Specifically, UNCDF roots this deliberate focus and capability in its unique investment mandate to support the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Doha Programme of Action for LDCs.

UNCDF operates as a hybrid development organization and development finance institution. In this capacity, it offers targeted technical and financial advice, designs custom financial solutions, de-risks investments, and enhances investment readiness for SDG-aligned projects. Moreover, UNCDF partners with the private sector, UNOs, International and Local Finance Institutions, Development Finance Institutions, and Foundations, among others. Consequently, UNCDF develops local financial systems, new markets, and mobilizes capital from both public and private sources. Indeed, a partnership mindset drives UNCDF, enabling it to deploy its different capital capabilities in highly tailored and responsive ways. As a result, UNCDF strategically focuses its work on six priority areas, including:

  • Sub-national and local infrastructure financing
  • Women-owned enterprise financing
  • Nature and climate financing
  • Energy and decarbonization finance
  • Sustainable food systems financing
  • Inclusive digital finance
