The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is hiring a Programme Officer (P-4) for its Mitigation Division in Bonn, Germany. About the Role
As the new Programme Officer, you will join the Mitigation Division’s Emissions Removal Unit. In this capacity, you will act as the Team Lead for Article 6.4 implementation, serving as the senior technical officer responsible for methodological issues related to GHG removal activities. UNFCCC offers the position for an initial contract of one year and six months, with the possibility of extension.

Key Responsibilities
A successful candidate will perform the following key tasks:
- Methodology Development & Oversight: Lead the creation and revision of new methodological standards for GHG removal under Article 6.4. You will also assess stakeholder submissions for compliance with the rules and draft recommendations for review by the Supervisory Body.
- Policy Support & Liaison: Prepare reports and documentation for intergovernmental negotiations. Furthermore, you will draft speaking notes and negotiation texts for key stakeholders. You will also represent the UNFCCC at international forums, workshops, and seminars.
- Collaboration & Management: Offer technical insights to other mitigation teams. You will also recommend and cultivate cooperative relationships with key partners and handle stakeholder queries. Finally, you will manage and support the work of expert group members.
Qualifications
- Education: You must have an advanced university degree (Master’s) in environmental science, engineering, economics, or a related discipline. Candidates with a first-level degree and an additional two years of professional experience may also qualify.
- Experience: You need a minimum of seven (7) years of relevant professional experience in climate change, environmental regulation, or a related field. Specifically, experience in methodology development and assessment is highly desirable. At least two years of experience in an international setting is an asset.
- Languages: Fluency in both written and spoken English is required. A working knowledge of other UN languages, such as French, Spanish, or Arabic, is an advantage.
Compensation & Logistics for UNFCCC Programme Officer
UNFCCC offers a competitive compensation and benefits package for this role. The annual net salary is USD 84,672, plus a post adjustment (currently 40.3%). This includes a comprehensive UN benefit package.
