You’ll lead a world-class center. Specifically, this center dedicates itself to generating cutting-edge knowledge, fostering innovation, and informing policy development on critical governance challenges globally.


About This Transformative Leadership Role for the Director, Global Governance Centre

As Director, Global Governance Centre, you will define and implement the GPCG’s strategic direction. Concurrently, you’ll mobilize resources and oversee daily operations. Beyond that, you’ll be a key voice in global governance discourse. You’ll ensure the Centre’s research and insights translate into actionable solutions. These solutions, in turn, consistently support UNDP’s mission to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This pivotal role, therefore, demands a deep strategic and operational understanding. Specifically, you need to understand UNDP’s Global Policy Network (GPN). This includes its Governance, Rule of Law, and Peacebuilding (GRP) Hub. Furthermore, it also covers the anchor Bureaux for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) and Crisis Bureau (CB). Ultimately, you’ll champion dynamic interactions across the GPN. This embeds the Centre’s work, consequently, within UNDP’s core activities, ensuring the Global Policy Centre for Governance achieves its full potential.


Key Responsibilities and Impact as GPCG Director for Global Governance

Your leadership as Director, Global Governance Centre will drive impact across several critical areas:

  • Strategic Vision & Leadership: Provide inspirational leadership and strategic direction for the GPCG. Ensure its effective integration within the GRP Hub and the broader GPN. Additionally, drive a highly visible research and policy program. This program, crucially, consistently strengthens UNDP’s credibility and links directly to our Strategic Plan.
  • Thought Leadership & Innovation: Position the GPCG as a global leader in governance, rule of law, and peacebuilding. Consequently, contribute substantively to UNDP’s strategic positioning, thought leadership, and knowledge product pipeline. Identify and leverage the latest research, technological advancements, and innovations. These efforts, furthermore, will consistently influence policymakers and stakeholders.
  • Partnerships & Representation: Cultivate and strengthen strategic partnerships. This includes the Government of Norway, research institutes, and civil society organizations. Moreover, it also extends to UN agencies, IFIs, and other key global stakeholders. Crucially, emphasize South-South and triangular cooperation. Indeed, you will represent UNDP to Norwegian authorities. You will also fulfill other senior representation functions as needed. Lead resource mobilization efforts. These efforts, ultimately, ensure the Centre’s sustained impact.
  • Knowledge Management & Integration: Facilitate a robust learning agenda within the GPN. Ensure the Centre’s knowledge, lessons learned, and innovations are effectively disseminated. Therefore, integrate them seamlessly into UNDP’s global work.

What We Seek in a Leader for Global Governance Initiatives

  • Education: An advanced university degree (Master’s) is required. Focus areas include Political Science, International Relations, Social Policy, Public Policy, Law, Economics, Development Studies, or related disciplines. Alternatively, a first-level university degree (Bachelor’s) with two additional years of relevant experience will be considered.
  • Professional Experience:
    • At least 15 years of progressive experience in governance, rule of law, or peacebuilding is essential. This must cover diverse developing country contexts.
    • Moreover, demonstrated expertise in applying research to inform policy and programming is crucial.
    • A solid track record of high-level advocacy, communication, and representation is also required.
    • In addition, proven ability to convene and facilitate high-level substantive policy dialogues is a must. You will consistently bring together multiple stakeholders.
    • Strong leadership in managing and developing high-performing teams is likewise necessary.
    • Furthermore, experience presenting complex issues to a diverse public audience is vital.
    • Knowledge of and experience with UN/UNDP operations is an asset.
    • Ideally, understanding of Norwegian and Nordic development aid priorities is highly desirable. Familiarity with the region’s research and civil society community is a plus.
    • Proven success in resource mobilization is also desirable.
  • Language: Excellent written and oral English communication and presentation skills are essential. However, working knowledge of another UN language or a Scandinavian language is desirable.
