Media and Communications Manager, Washington, DC or Remote
CARE is hiring a Media and Communications Manager to support our enterprise-wide strategic communications. The role’s specific focus is on Executive Thought Leadership. As a matter of fact, this is a full-time position that can be remote. However, we have a strong preference for candidates based in Washington, D.C.

The Role: Media and Communications Manager
The ideal candidate has an excellent understanding of global news cycles and a passion for humanitarian work. Indeed, you will be instrumental in growing CARE’s voice and profile by securing quality media coverage for our organization. The role requires a strong writer with a background working on a media relations team or in an agency setting. Additionally, you need a deep understanding of strategic communications. You will report to the Executive Director of Media and Communications.

Remote Media and Communications Manager
Responsibilities of the Media and Communications Manager
As the Media and Communications Manager, you will handle a wide range of duties. These include media relations, executive thought leadership, and spokesperson engagement.
Media Relations Management
- Proactive Outreach: First, you will conduct general media relations and proactive outreach for CARE’s CEO, Leadership, and other US teams.
- Relationship Building: In addition, you will target and build relationships with breaking news reporters, editors, producers, and news desks, as well as those covering issues relevant to CARE.
- Interview Coordination: You will also field, vet, and manage incoming interview requests. Then, you will connect journalists with the appropriate information and spokespeople.
- Press Support: Finally, you will support press briefings and staff interviews as needed.
Executive Thought Leadership
- Coordination and Execution: Specifically, you will collaborate with the Executive Director to manage the coordination and execution of CARE’s Executive Thought Leadership plan. This plan, after all, aims to elevate the perspective of the CEO and other leadership.
- Content Creation: This, of course, includes internal project management, creating content and editorial products, and building media relationships.
- Forum Identification: Furthermore, you will identify and secure participation for Leadership in relevant forums and engagements.
Spokesperson Liaison
- Spokesperson Support: You will, moreover, identify and support spokespeople, including senior leadership. This ensures they are prepared for interviews.
- Materials Development: You will develop, draft, and secure approvals for talking points and briefing packets.
- Media Training: Finally, you will provide consistent and ad hoc media training and workshops for spokespeople.
CEO Social Media Engagement
- Strategy Management: Lastly, you will collaborate closely with CARE’s Office of the President to manage the CEO’s overall social media engagement strategy.
- Content Creation: This will, accordingly, include proactively developing and securing approvals for CEO social media posts.
- Analytics & Planning: In addition, you will monitor analytics, create forward-looking editorial calendars, and secure relevant content from across the CARE network for use on leadership channels.
Qualifications for the Media and Communications Manager
A strong background working on a media relations team or in an agency setting is required for this communications manager role.
- A deep understanding of strategic communications is also essential.
- Strong writing skills are required.
- A passion for humanitarian work and CARE’s mission to end hunger and poverty is of paramount importance.
- Finally, we have a strong preference for candidates with experience working for a humanitarian NGO or in a major communications agency. This is a key qualification for this Media and Communications Manager role.
