Afghanistan is currently grappling with the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Amid this context, UN Women remains fully committed to supporting Afghan women and girls and protecting their gains. We are seeking a Knowledge Management Consultant to provide technical support for our work in the Balkh Sub-office. As a result, your work will be instrumental in documenting innovative practices and developing high-quality knowledge products that will inform future programming and foster broader change for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

 

The Role: Knowledge Management for Gender Equality

The Balkh Sub-office is focused on documenting innovative practices that work for women. Given the fragility of women’s rights in the region, this knowledge management work is vital. Therefore, you will provide technical advisory support to the team, documenting working practices and developing knowledge products to inform future initiatives.

Key Deliverables for this Knowledge Management Consultancy include:

  • Documentation Framework: You will develop a structured framework and methodology for documenting practices. This includes selection criteria, interview guides, and data matrices for the knowledge management effort.
  • Data Collection: You will conduct primary data collection including Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) with the UN Women team and partners. In addition, you will facilitate Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with women beneficiaries and participants.
  • Validation of Findings: To ensure accuracy, you will cross-analyze data from various sources. Furthermore, you will facilitate a validation workshop with key stakeholders to verify findings and identify additional promising practices for women’s empowerment.
  • Knowledge Products: Using the data and insights you collect, you will produce three in-depth case studies of innovative practices. Likewise, you will create knowledge briefs, slide decks, and summary infographics for wider dissemination.

Qualifications for a Knowledge Management Consultant

The ideal candidate for this Knowledge Management Consultant role is a seasoned professional with a passion for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Key Qualifications:

  • Education: Candidates must have a Master’s degree in a relevant field such as gender studies, development studies, or communications. A first-level university degree with two additional years of qualifying experience may also be accepted.
  • Experience: You must have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience in knowledge management, documentation, or research with a focus on gender equality. Experience developing knowledge products and working with diverse stakeholders is desirable.
  • Language: You must be fluent in English. You must also speak either Dari or Pashto fluently.
  • Skills: Strong analytical and communication skills are essential for effective documentation. You must have the ability to work independently, manage priorities, and meet deadlines.

This is a home-based consultancy position. The consultant will follow UN Women’s travel policy for any official travel to rural areas in Afghanistan.
