The Role: Guiding Federal Clients as a Service Designer
As a Service Designer at Steampunk, you will play a pivotal role in guiding government clients through the organization’s unique Design Intelligence™ framework. To elaborate, this framework effectively incorporates human-centered methods to address end-to-end organizational and experience challenges. Furthermore, your responsibilities will include leading and facilitating dynamic discovery sessions, which are crucial for uncovering customer pain points and identifying enterprise-wide opportunities. Key Contributions for a Federal Service Designer: Shaping Mission Impact
A Federal Service Designer contributes significantly through various responsibilities:
- First, participation in all aspects of discovery to gain a profound understanding of client mission and goals; stakeholders, users, and their ecosystems; current state journeys; distinct user segments; and specific program and project objectives.
- Second, conducting impactful workshops and interviews to effectively frame pain points and opportunities, define clear problem statements, and validate critical hypotheses.
- Third, synthesizing diverse research and data to communicate actionable insights and make robust recommendations. These recommendations, crucially, will ultimately shape mission/program strategy, drive service and workflow innovations, and contribute to a compelling future experience vision.
- Next, creating essential design artifacts such as journey maps, service blueprints, vision roadmaps, personas, and ecosystem and experience maps. Essential Qualifications for a Federal Service Designer
To be successful in this Service Designer role, candidates typically possess:
- Foremost, ability to obtain a U.S. government Public Trust Security Clearance.
- Moreover, at least 4 years of experience in human-centered design, service design, and/or customer experience design.
- In addition, a current portfolio that clearly demonstrates ideology, methods, tools, skills, and craft.
- Furthermore, thorough knowledge and demonstrated experience conducting primary and secondary research, including stakeholder and user interviews, design-thinking, and co-creation workshops. This experience, specifically, extends to applying those insights effectively to personas, journey maps, process maps, ecosystem maps, roadmaps, stakeholder maps, and service blueprints.
- Crucially, experience working on a Scrum team within the Agile delivery framework, along with practical experience integrating research and design into technical sprints, including writing user stories and story pointing.
- Beyond that, proficiency in tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Mural, and Lucidchart.
- Equally important, a strong desire to keep pace with ever-changing industry tools and best practices, coupled with the ability to make recommendations as needed for the best outcome.
- Additionally, experience collaborating within a multi-disciplinary delivery team, including UX/UI designers, technologists, data scientists, engineers, solution architects, and change managers.
- Also, a natural curiosity for solving problems, combined with strong analytical skills.
- Furthermore, a collaborative nature, evidenced by excellent written communication and presentation skills.
- Lastly, experience working effectively in a project-based environment.
- A relevant degree or equivalent experience in Human-Centered Design (HCD) and/or service design.

$85,000 to $150,000 USD
