Your Role as an Environmental Affairs Intern in D.C.

The STAP provides crucial, independent scientific and technical advice to the Global Environment Facility (GEF) on its policies and projects. Thus, a Programme Officer will supervise your work as an Environmental Affairs Intern, and you will perform the following duties:

  • Environmental Research Support: First, conduct research on critical environmental focal areas for the GEF. These include biodiversity, climate change mitigation, climate change adaptation, chemicals and waste, land degradation, and international waters. For example, you might help with STAP Papers and other relevant documents as an Environmental Affairs Intern.
  • Meeting & Communication Assistance: Next, prepare essential speaking notes and presentations. You will also organize STAP meetings and workshops, thus ensuring smooth operations. Furthermore, contribute to STAP communications, including updating the STAP website as part of your Environmental Affairs Intern duties.
  • General Program Support: Finally, you will perform other assigned duties that support the STAP Secretariat’s overall operations and initiatives.

Qualifications for This Environmental Affairs Internship

Applicants for the UN Internship Programme do not need prior professional work experience. However, candidates must meet specific academic requirements for this Environmental Affairs Intern role:

  • Education: You must either enroll in, or have completed, a graduate school program (second university degree or equivalent, or higher). Alternatively, you must enroll in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor’s degree or equivalent) in environmental sciences, social science, environmental law, or a related field.
  • Technical Skills: You must possess good knowledge of standard software applications. Specifically, this includes MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and MS Teams.
  • Language Proficiency: You must demonstrate fluency in spoken and written English for this internship. Moreover, knowledge of an additional official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) offers an advantage.
