Director, Major Gifts – Northeast (Hybrid)

HIAS is seeking a dynamic and strategic Director, Major Gifts – Northeast to join our Individual Giving team. In this role, you will, therefore, join a high-performing cohort of major gift officers. You will be responsible for deepening and expanding our philanthropic partnerships with individuals who contribute $25,000 or more annually.
This is more than a frontline fundraising role—it is, in fact, an opportunity to help shape the future of a historic and values-driven organization. The Major Gifts Director will play a central role in growing HIAS’ major donor base across the Northeast corridor. You will expand our reach, deepen relationships, and raise critical resources to advance our mission of welcome, safety, and justice for forcibly displaced people around the world.
We offer a salary range of $130,000.00 to $155,000.00 for this position. You can work from our headquarters in New York, New York, or you can work remotely if you live outside of commuting distance to our offices in states where we are registered (Connecticut, New Jersey, New York).
Essential Functions of the Director, Major Gifts
- Build and manage a portfolio of major donor prospects, focusing on high-net-worth individuals capable of giving $25,000 or more annually.
- In addition, partner with the mid-level team to identify and cultivate donors ready to grow their giving journey. You will, consequently, develop customized strategies for cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
- Bring HIAS’ case for giving to life by crafting personalized narratives that connect donors to the mission and impact of their support.
- Following this, you will lead with curiosity and care, creating intentional donor engagement strategies and cultivating meaningful, long-term partnerships.
- Craft and execute a clear annual plan, aligning portfolio activity with agency-wide fundraising goals, including a $28M unrestricted revenue target.
- Actively plan and execute donor meetings, gatherings, and site visits to strengthen relationships and uncover new opportunities.
- Similarly, you will collaborate with lay leadership and senior staff, leveraging their networks and influence to advance donor strategy.
- You will also partner with development operations to ensure accurate tracking, reporting, and analytics related to donor engagement and giving.
- Finally, you will contribute to a strong, collaborative team culture where ideas and insights are shared and celebrated.

Remote Director, Major Gifts
Qualifications for this Major Gifts Director Role
- A Bachelor’s degree is required.
- Furthermore, you must have 8-10 years of direct fundraising experience with a strong track record in individual major giving.
- You must have demonstrated success in donor cultivation and solicitation. Experience working with and through volunteers and senior leadership is also a must.
- Familiarity with the Jewish community and/or a deep appreciation for HIAS’ mission and values is strongly preferred.
- Likewise, you must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as the ability to build trust and credibility with donors, colleagues, and partners.
- Additionally, you must be self-directed and highly organized, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment.
- You should be comfortable with CRM systems and fundraising analytics, and be able to translate data into strategy.
- Knowledge of planned giving vehicles and the ability to collaborate with endowment staff is also required.
- Most importantly, you must be willing to travel, including occasional travel to international or insecure locations as needed.
