About the Office of the Special Representative: General Assembly resolution 62/141 guides the mandate. This resolution, furthermore, established the Special Representative as a global, independent advocate for preventing and eliminating all forms of violence against children. Moreover, in September 2023, the Special Representative received a request to take political leadership of the Pathfinding initiative. This initiative, therefore, formerly a component of the Global Partnership on Ending Violence Against Children, aligns with the mandate. It acts as a catalyst to stimulate Member States’ engagement and mobilize action. Ultimately, it achieves Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) commitments to tackle violence and its drivers. Key Contributions as a Consultant for Child Protection Initiatives

Under the direct guidance of the Special Representative (SRSG VAC) and the Chief of Staff, the Consultant will undertake a range of strategic and operational tasks. Indeed, this remote position is instrumental in advancing the mission to protect children globally, particularly through its focus on the MENA region. Core Responsibilities and Engagement for Child Protection Programs

  • Pathfinding Initiative Expansion: You’ll directly engage with the Pathfinding component and its expansion into Pathfinding countries within the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. Initially, you’ll provide four months of service to support the transition of Pathfinding. Concurrently, you’ll expand engagement, particularly with countries and partners at regional and national levels in MENA, to accelerate efforts to end violence against children, including gender mainstreaming (20% of effort). Moreover, you’ll strengthen collaboration with States, UN entities, regional organizations, and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). This work, therefore, reinforces the OSRSG-VAC’s role as a leading UN-affiliated NGO in child protection.
  • Advocacy and Communication Support: You’ll support data and information gathering. You’ll also prepare press releases in Arabic for communication and advocacy purposes. Additionally, you’ll organize regional events in both the Arab and Africa regions. This, consequently, ensures broad reach for child protection initiatives.

 

Deliverables for this Child Protection Consultancy

  • Case Studies: You’ll prepare at least two detailed case studies. These will highlight actions national organizations and institutions in the MENA region took to address violence against children. Specifically, you’ll meticulously write up these case studies of action taken by such organizations and institutions.
  • Statement Drafting: You’ll draft the statement of achievements towards peace and development. This document, furthermore, is crucial for communicating progress.
  • Arabic Translation & Interpretation: You’ll translate and interpret statements and all required media components in Arabic. This is essential for advocacy purposes specifically within the MENA region. Your fluency, therefore, will directly support child protection efforts.

 

Qualifications and Requirements for this UN Consultant Role

Essential Qualifications and Experience for a Child Protection Consultant

  • Education: You need an advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in law, political science, international relations, urban studies, social sciences, or a related field. Alternatively, a first-level university degree combined with qualifying experience may be accepted.
  • Professional Experience: You must have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience. This experience, furthermore, should be in human rights, political affairs, international relations, law, or a related area.
  • Child Rights Expertise: Experience in the field of child rights and child protection is mandatory for this Consultant Child Protection USA position.
  • Regional Knowledge: You must possess demonstrated knowledge of the Arabic region. This, therefore, is a key requirement for a MENA Child Protection Expert.
