About the Role


As the lead human rights expert on the DRC, you will join the East and Southern Africa Regional Office. Furthermore, you will play a central part in shaping Amnesty International’s strategic direction for research and campaigning in the region. The role requires an individual with deep regional expertise and a commitment to justice, truth, and accountability to contribute to international human rights efforts.

Key Responsibilities


A successful candidate will perform the following key tasks:

  • Research & Reporting: Lead strategic, action-focused research into human rights issues in the DRC and the wider Great Lakes region. You will monitor developments and produce timely reports that inform global campaigns. Additionally, you will design and implement field research missions, conducting interviews with survivors and key actors on the ground.
  • Advocacy & Representation: Develop policy and advocacy materials, including briefings and public reports, for both international and local audiences. You will also represent Amnesty International at conferences and media interviews as the primary spokesperson for DRC-related issues.
  • Collaboration & Networking: Build and maintain effective working relationships with human rights defenders, media, and government representatives. Moreover, you will collaborate with other departments and support colleagues working on DRC-related projects to ensure a coordinated approach.

Qualifications


  • Education: A university degree in law, political science, international relations, or a related social science discipline is preferred. Additional training in field research methodologies or conflict analysis is an asset.
  • Experience: You must have proven professional experience conducting high-quality, field-based human rights research, particularly in conflict-affected regions. Additionally, you need in-depth knowledge of the political, social, and legal context in the DRC, and experience with the wider Great Lakes region is advantageous.
  • Skills: Fluency in both English and French (written and spoken) is essential. You must also demonstrate an ability to produce a variety of content under pressure and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
