About the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI)

The Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) is a global health organization. First and foremost, it commits to saving lives and reducing the burden of disease in low- and middle-income countries. Established in 2002, CHAI’s founding mission, indeed, directly addressed the HIV/AIDS epidemic by drastically reducing the cost of life-saving drugs and expanding access to these essential medicines.

Evolving Mission and Global Impact

Over two decades, however, CHAI has significantly broadened its focus. Today, its work extends beyond HIV to encompass other infectious diseases like COVID-19, malaria, tuberculosis, and hepatitis. Furthermore, the organization also tackles non-communicable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, and hypertension. It also strives to accelerate the rollout of vital vaccines, reduce maternal and child mortality, combat chronic malnutrition, and increase access to assistive technology. Moreover, a core strategy involves investing in horizontal approaches to strengthen entire health systems. This includes, for instance, crucial programs in human resources for health, digital health, and health financing. Every new initiative, therefore, remains firmly grounded in maximizing sustainable impact at scale, ensuring that partner governments lead solutions, programs are designed for national reach, and learnings are shared globally.

Collaborative Approach and Values

CHAI operates by invitation from governments. It collaborates closely with both public and private sectors to build and sustain high-quality health systems that can, in time, thrive independently. This unique market-shaping approach, furthermore, involves negotiating agreements to lower prices for critical health commodities—from drugs and diagnostics to vaccines—thus making them accessible and affordable for millions.

The organization’s success, ultimately, hinges on its diverse team of passionate individuals across 40 countries, with the majority of staff based in program countries. CHAI values fairness and mutual respect. It is, moreover, an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to diversity and inclusion, recognizing that varied experiences and backgrounds are, indeed, vital to advancing its mission of health equity worldwide.
