About This UNDP Digital Transformation Internship Opportunity

At UNDP, we firmly believe that digital technology can be a powerful force for both people and our planet. For this reason, our Chief Digital Office (CDO) is leading an exciting transformation. We are currently embedding digital tools into development projects, supporting governments in building inclusive digital ecosystems, and simultaneously transforming our own organization from within.

We’re looking for part-time or full-time interns to join us and support various critical areas within this UNDP Digital Transformation Internship. While the start date is flexible, we will be reviewing applications continuously until August 31st, 2025. If you’re successful, you might hear back any time between March 1st and the end of 2025.


What You’ll Be Doing in This Internship

Interns will contribute to key initiatives across several workstreams within the broader UNDP Digital Transformation Internship framework. For example, your tasks could include:

Digital Transformation: Inclusive Digital Ecosystems

  • Help shape local digital ecosystems, always keeping a rights-based and inclusive approach in mind.
  • Support the rollout of inclusive, equitable, and secure digital and data public infrastructure. This work, in particular, involves digital public goods and robust governance frameworks.
  • Conduct primary research and content review on crucial topics like inclusive connectivity, digital inclusion, ethical technology, and AI.
  • Furthermore, you’ll contribute to knowledge management by gathering and sharing digital insights from across the organization.
  • Ultimately, your work will also involve supporting advocacy efforts through creating easy-to-understand content for social media, blogs, and briefing notes.

Digital Transformation: Country Office Support & Capacity Building

  • Assist in assessing countries’ digital and AI readiness.
  • Work with Country Offices on their national data and AI strategies, data governance frameworks, and operational implementation.
  • Furthermore, you’ll help make digital, data, and AI capacity-building resources more accessible and useful for governments.
  • Moreover, you’ll provide support for programmatic initiatives around AI and Data, covering areas like multilingualism in AI, green computing, and AI trust and safety.
  • Another key task involves supporting the development of tools and solutions that empower governments to launch practical, inclusive initiatives.
  • In addition, you’ll assist Country Offices with their partnership-related needs.
  • Lastly, you’ll contribute to developing and delivering a digital-skills program for all UNDP personnel.

Digital Transformation: UNDP Digital Strategy Development & Implementation

  • Support UNDP’s global standing and thought leadership by researching key digital topics and synthesizing information for senior leadership.
  • Also, help manage and maintain UNDP’s digital guides webpage, collaborating with relevant stakeholders.
  • You’ll contribute to designing UNDP’s digital capacity footprint.
  • Provide front-office support to the Chief Digital Officer, which specifically includes managing engagements and drafting speeches.
  • Moreover, you’ll analyze the progress of UNDP’s Digital Strategy implementation using data analysis and by evaluating monitoring processes, always suggesting improvements for efficiency.

Business Operations (People Operations/Procurement/Finance/Internal Processes)

  • Assist the Operations Unit in completing various tasks and tracking progress.
  • You’ll also support the implementation, monitoring, and reporting of Resourcing Plans.
  • Help organize meetings, workshops, and travel.
  • Additionally, assist in ensuring compliance with Procurement and Recruitment policies.
  • Draft and update the team’s best practices, actively driving new projects to improve operations.
  • Ultimately, you’ll identify inefficiencies and develop actionable plans to boost productivity.

Thought Leadership, Engagement, Partnerships, and Strategic Communications

  • Research potential new partners (such as technology companies, foundations, and non-profits) and pinpoint new opportunities for collaboration.
  • Support strategic communications, outreach, and partnership development. This often involves drafting concept notes, proposals, and MOUs.
  • Furthermore, you’ll assist in engaging in global, multilateral, and UN interagency processes.
  • Another aspect of your role will be supporting UNDP’s position and thought leadership on digital by researching and analyzing key technology issues, especially those related to development.
  • Contribute to strategic communications by planning and creating compelling content for social media, newsletters, blogs, and internal platforms.
  • Moreover, you’ll support research and mapping of key media outlets, influential content partners, and trending topics in digital technology.

Product Design, Build, and Management (including AI tools)

  • Support the design of digital products like apps, platforms, web apps, and AI tools to help UNDP’s work in countries. This includes defining success and product requirements with “client” teams.
  • Assist with scoping and writing proposals for new digital products for UNDP thematic teams.
  • Next, you’ll support the building of digital products, working closely with software developers, client teams, and product managers.
  • Conduct user testing and improvement of digital products.
  • Finally, you’ll support the implementation of digital products in countries, collaborating with local and UNDP thematic teams to ensure quality delivery.

UNDP Transformation: Change Management

  • Support the management of UNDP’s Communities of Practice to foster knowledge exchange and skill development.
  • Assist in tracking and analyzing progress on UNDP’s Digital Transformation initiatives.
  • Also, contribute to internal communications by designing emails, preparing meeting invitations, and maintaining the knowledge database.
  • Additionally, support efforts to integrate digital tools into UNDP programs by contributing to knowledge products and information-sharing processes.

Required Skills and Experience

Candidates must meet one of these educational requirements for the UNDP Digital Transformation Internship:

  • Currently enrolled in a graduate school program (second university degree or higher).
  • Currently enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (undergraduate; minimum bachelor’s level).
  • Alternatively, candidates may have graduated with a university degree (first university degree or higher) and, if selected, must start the internship within one year of graduation.

  • Interns are eligible for a monthly stipend. The exact rate varies by location and is adjusted for part-time/remote internships.
  • If you receive financial support from another institution, UNDP will pay the difference if that support is less than our stipend.

  • UNDP doesn’t cover costs from accidents, illness, or death during the internship.
